ages and ages ago, Devendra used to sleep on my friends couch in San Francisco. i met the dude twice at my friends shows. he was super lanky and awkward but in that kind of “oh, you GET shit DONT you” kind of way when you looked at him looking wide eyed at pretty much anything.

this same ‘friend’ was also in a band with Joanna Newsom, who gave me her broken tamborine back in the day.

the friend in question, who shall remain unnamed, is one of those people i wish i had stayed in contact with just for stories sake. but i was like, 17, and you dont think of these things at the time. you kind of think about how you’re going to get laid next, and i was barking up this russian girl’s tree at that point, gloriously unaware of the burgeoningly brilliant San Francisco alt-folk scene happening quite literally two steps away from me. such is life, and that’s how you learn your lessons - in technicolor hindsight.
