RE: Todd Glass, coming out, and gay rights.

I have a ton of respect for anyone that decides to come out of the closet. Or anyone gay, really. I have no idea how they do it. It’s bizarre to think that in this day and age it’s still taboo to have a genetic disposition. There’s so much more I could write. I’m really at a loss for words – people have worded it so much better than me but if I didn’t say anything about it I don’t know what I’d do.

As a straight white guy who has no way to fully comprehend any sort of persecution beyond employees of Target asking me repeatedly to not drink in their store, I really don’t have a whole lot to complain about in this world. Nobody is going to potentially kill me or ostracize me from society for my sexuality – I don’t have to keep it a secret from other people, it isn’t a “thing” that I have to work around. I didn’t have to fight for years in order to just exist side by side with the rest of society and be viewed as an equal.

It’s so stupid, y’know? Why should anyone be treated any different? Why is it still “taboo” for someone to be themselves? Why is it still “a debated point” over whether gay people should get married or not? Do you KNOW the amount of push against being themselves a gay man or lady gets just for being who they are? Why is that? Why is that still a “thing”? Todd Glass is 47. That’s (take a few years off at the beginning for being a toddler/newborn) roughly 43 years of not being able to fully express who he is. Could you imagine that happening to a straight person? No. That’s what’s fucking ridiculous. Declaring your sexuality in America should be as difficult as ordering a sandwich. “I’ll have a #3 with serrano ham and fig spread and arugula and oh yeah, I’m gay, and could you make that toasted, please?”. It should be that easy. But it’s not because people are ignorant. I hesitate to say “stupid” because there’s an awful lot of intelligent yet wholly culturally ignorant people out there who just plain haven’t thought outside their own comforts.

I have quite literally all of the respect in the world for someone that chooses to come out gay. It takes a ton of strength. Nobody had to die or put everything on the line for their right to be straight. No straight guy is racking his brains and not sleeping tonight because he’s attracted to women and can’t tell anyone about it and/or is afraid of getting beat up or worse because of it. And it shouldn’t be that way. This country should be waythefuckmore equal when it comes to gay rights. Alright. I’m wording this terribly. I just had to let it out.
