People’s default is to assume that, fundamentally, people are “good”. That is your default setting when you are a child. You look at the world and think “nothing bad can come from this for I, myself, am producing good for there is simply no need for negative energy”. Of course, you would say that in baby language. This is everything you thought before you acquired memory, and perhaps more importantly, the shame reflex. Shame is what is silencing the rest of the country. “I work real hard and by golly things aren’t working like they used to. I better not say anything too loudly. It’s probably that new President” or something along those lines. Would you want your lunch money taken away from you for speaking against the school bully?
Any “ism” can be hijacked and ruined by the human condition. Capitalism, when done right, when regulated, is a positive thing. Socialism, when done right, is also a wonderful thing. Both, when pure, are about level playing fields, which is what the 99% should really be fighting for. They have the attention of the world, but seem to have frozen up with stage fright when asked what to say. Right now, it just looks odd . To reject capitalism while standing in the most expensive city in America wearing sneakers made for pennies by third-world children is an outrageous microcosm of the entire problem at large.
It’s not that the 99% Movement are against “banks”. You can’t be against ‘a building’. It’d be the same, fundamentally, as getting upset at a hot dog stand. What the 99% Movement is really against is liars, and what I think the rest of the country doesn’t understand is that we (ALL of us, everyone in this country) is involved in an abusive relationship with capitalism. And people just keep going back to it, over and over, and getting hurt, but keep blaming it on themselves for getting so hurt by free market capitalism.
If there’s anything I know about people it’s that not everyone who has “made it” (be it in Hollywood circles or New York media parties) is necessarily a nice person. People lie, cheat, and steal to get some of those positions because nobody is immune to power. You can turn Mr Chips into Scarface if you give him the option to. What would you do if given the power of TEN men and were told that NINE men were going to try to take away that power from you? You’d do what the people at the top are doing right now.
This whole ordeal is ultimately about bullies (such an archaic metaphor but so, so very apt for this situation) and the acquisition and retention of power. Those who fear the bullies the most have the most to lose and still cling to the idea that the bully will win due to sheer dominance. After all, these people have worked hard to be where they are! They’re successful because they’ve “won” and are simply “better” than us, right? Just like the Kardashians. Those who “win” are “better”. They say the cream rises to the top, right? Well, I’ve got news for you.
Shit floats.
