here’s to idealism

is a highly idealistic view of things necessarily a bad thing?

other than setting ones self up for inevitable heartbreak and failure, descent and derision into the more positive sides of your wants and needs ain’t necessarily as bad as you think it might be. we are generationally conditioned not to overstep the boundaries in our heads to get what we desire; if you hung a $100 bill over our heads on a fishing pole we’d all raise our hands but statistically only 1 out of 25 would actually try to grab it. the rest of us would just try to ask questions about how to get it. “excuse me, but what am i supposed to do, just grab it?”.

to have an idealistic view of love might make you think that your dreams of that perfect girl (or guy) are totally out of this world. but is there anything wrong with knowing what you want? would you go without sugar for a week for a feast on Sunday? i mean, patience is a virtue - but being a cat-lady (or worse, cat-man) is not… but doesn’t it save you from a lifetime of bar hookups and evenings spent going through your phone wondering “who the fuck is that”? if people didn’t tie regret in with patience then it might actually highlight the fact that an idealistic view of things - i think - actually brings a level of quality control. on a small scale, you just saved yourself $25 from not buying that t-shirt that you only “kinda” liked. in the long run, you didn’t get married to the girl that drinks a bottle of rum and gets black out rage drunk listening to sad bastard music with her headphone on. even if she is a 10. i’ve been there.

having an idea of what you truly want gives you perspective also on what comes your way: being offered not quite the job of a lifetime, when juxtaposed to your ideal job, might show you some things about that job offer that make it stand out. not everything is going to be a homerun out of the park, but there’s nothing wrong with a ground-rule double here or there. having a grasp of what brings you true happiness might actually help you achieve it… so many people don’t know what the fuck they want.
